Create Together Activity Booklet
City Arts + Nottingham Refugee Week

I was commissioned by Nottingham’s City Arts and Nottingham Refugee Week to create an activity book for children and young adults between the ages of 6 and 15 years old. The books were sent out as part of an arts pack to refugee families across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Each year refugee week has a different theme. This year’s is ‘we cannot walk alone’. The activities in this booklet will help you explore what that means. They will help you reach out and connect with others. Whoever and wherever you are, we hope you enjoy it.

City Arts, based in Nottingham UK, City Arts have been breaking down barriers to reconnect people with art, culture and creativity since 1977. They stand up for people who are underrepresented in the arts and see talent where it has been overlooked and undervalued. They make sure their work is inclusive and relevant by listening to what communities need.

Refugee Week is a gesture of welcome and solidarity. In Nottinghamshire, it’s a celebration of the cultural richness and contributions that refugees and asylum seekers bring to our home. This year Refugee Week is 14th – 20th June 2021. Refugee Week exists both to raise awareness of the reasons why people are forced to seek refuge – persecution, war, poverty and conflict – and also to celebrate the contributions made by refugees and asylum seekers to the economic, cultural and social life of the city. Refugee Week began nationally in 1998 as a direct reaction to hostility in the media and society towards refugees and asylum seekers. It is now q leading national initiatives working to counter this negative climate, defending the importance of sanctuary and the benefits it can bring to both refugees and ‘host’ communities.
